Mobile's Historic Districts

There are nine historic districts in Mobile.

Seven of them impose design regulations that require changes to the exterior of buildings to be approved by the City's Architectural Review Board: Church Street East, DeTonti Square, Oakleigh Garden District, Old Dauphin Way, Leinkauf, Ashland Place and Lower Dauphin

Two of the districts have no design regulations: Midtown and Campground.

The DeTonti Square and Church Street East districts were created in 1962, followed by Oakleigh Garden District in 1969.

Mobile's Historic Districts are administered by the Mobile Historic Development Commission.

The City of Mobile is investigating creating historic districts for two traditionally black neighborhoods: Africatown and Oakdale.
